Starting May 6, 2019, the regular Friday SMART Recovery meeting will be moved to a new day, time, and place! No, this isn’t TV, however the move may prove to be beneficial for those who would attend a second meeting but couldn’t make it to the Friday 3PM meeting!

The new Monday SMART Recovery meeting will be held a Family Service, Inc., behind the Fischer Rounds & Associates, Inc. building. The address is 2210 W. Brown Place, which is one block west of Western Ave. on W. 49th Street. The tan building with the tree cutout on it is Family Services, Inc.

We will gather you from the waiting room at around 5PM before going into the office where we will meet. From there, we will have a regular weekly meeting. We may have to take holidays off (since some fall on Mondays). For the most part, we should be able to meet regularly without interruption.

We hope you’ll join us for this exciting move and new meeting! Contact details are attached to the calendar section on the main page. See you on Monday!

Need More Meetings in Your Area?

April is Volunteer Month, a great chance to thank a volunteer and a great chance to become a volunteer and make SMART more accessible to others in your community. Training Scholarships are available to defray the cost of the SMART Recovery Facilitator and Support Team Distance Training(FAST). Talk with your local facilitator about volunteering and visit our website to learn more about how to become a volunteer. https://www.smartrecoverytraining.org/.

We celebrate Volunteer Month as a way to recognize the efforts of our thousands of dedicated volunteers that give their time and energy to empower others to overcome addiction. They inspire us every day and we hope that they inspire you to get involved and “give back”.

Applications for Volunteer Training Scholarships will be accepted for the entire month of April. If you’ve been considering volunteering at SMART Recovery, we invite you to get trained, get involved, and experience the rewards of helping others make a difference in their lives.

Application Process

Face-to-Face Volunteers are eligible to apply for Volunteer Training Scholarships during Volunteer Month. We encourage you to apply as soon as possible.

Applications can be found at this link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/AprVM19.

If you appreciate your face-to-face SMART Recovery meeting, let your facilitator know!

We invite you to take the volunteer training yourself and “give back” by becoming a part of your local SMART team of dedicated facilitators.

We look forward to your participation in the training, and to adding you to the team!

Support Volunteer Training with a gift to our scholarship fund

Your gift in April will make it possible for us to offer a training scholarship to anyone in need. And…your gift in April will be doubled, thanks to a matching challenge that we have received. Thank you for your support!

SMART Recovery is tailored to any addictive behavior. This includes smoking and nicotine addiction. As an ex-smoker who smoked for 25 years, Jerry Zeigler lived with a smoker father. His mother smoked until he was nine. Most of his adult relatives smoked. It was the social thing to do back then. Jerry despised his father’s smoking. He was sick regularly from what could be now called second-hand smoke-induced bronchitis.
At 12, he began to indulge in smokeless tobacco amongst his peers. He was hooked! Five years later, he began smoking. He would use methods like switching from cigarettes to smokeless tobacco, going cold turkey, and slowing down whenever he was sick. There were times when he made it a week, a month, several months, and a couple of years. However, he always returned to the tobacco and its nicotine addictive properties.
In July of 2010, he had summer bronchitis. He got sick during the family vacation, the first one had had ever taken with his children. A week later, he went to his parents’ house with two of his three children with him. He coughed and blinked the whole way up there and back. On the way back, he decided to buy patches and gum for a smoke cessation program. He later went on to continue this for the first three months. In the meantime, a smoking ban ballot issue came up in his state. The ban passed, which helped to cement his success.
The difference this time was that he put it in his mind that tobacco was the worst thing he could ever put into his body. It smelled bad. It tasted bad. Ashtrays and cigarettes butts made him want to gag. The smoke smelled nasty. The point was to make his addiction negative-in-a-good-way so he wouldn’t have to have the urges to return to it. Today, he is getting close to eight years without using tobacco.
There are several of the SMART Recovery tools that can help you with this addiction, too. Use the Hierarchy of Values, the Urge Log, the Cost-Benefit Analysis (CBA), the ABC’s, and
DISARM and DEADS formulas. Also, since smoking is getting harder to do these days with state laws banning it from public places, government buildings, and health care centers, perhaps it could get phased out of existence before to long. Several of us in SMART Recovery have used the tools to quit the addiction of tobacco. We think you can, too!

The definition of a co-occurring disorder is simply one whom has both an addiction and a mental illness. They go hand-in-hand with each other. The physiological aspect of mental illness means that it is genetic. People can live their entire lives without living with a mental illness, yet have the genes that they pass on down to their children. For this, it takes an environmental trigger. This trigger can be perpetuated by drugs, alcohol, an addictive behavior, or a trauma. On the other hand, the use of drugs and alcohol can be the trigger that sets off the mental illness.
The biophysical side of a mental illness is that the neurons, or nerve cells, either don’t have enough or produce too much serotonin, dopamine, GABA, or GBH. This chemical imbalance can cause manic anxiety, panic attacks, severe depression, delusions, or hallucinations. When this happens, instead of getting a proper diagnosis due to cost or being prescribed medications also because of cost, people have the tendency to use drugs or alcohol, go on wild spending sprees, engage in risky sexual acts, etc.
Somehow, this acts upon the brain at times to self-correct the chemical imbalances of the brain–albeit temporarily. At times, the depression can get worse, even leading up to suicidal ideation. Other times, narcotic stimulants can heighten the anxiety disorders or cause more fearful hallucinations to the schizophrenic. When in recovery, these same people may avail themselves to behavioral therapy and medications once in recovery. SMART Recovery’s stance on psychotropic medications is one of acceptance.
There is hope. SMART Recovery’s tools can help with the co-occurring disorders you may be living with. As a person with an co-occurring disorder, one might find themselves more accepted about there illness as some of us went down that same road. With the REBT exercises to help with exchanging irrational beliefs with rational beliefs, our stance on psychotropic medications and behavioral therapy, and urge logs, the person with co-occurring disorders can live a rich, meaningful life.
Robin Williams, which the following quote is taken from, lived with bi-polar disorder. He used drugs until the mid-1980s. His drug and alcohol use made him one of the most famous comedians out there, but it also nearly killed him. He stopped when his son Zack was born. He remained sober most of his life past that. Unfortunately, he met death through suicide after learning he had the fatal disease Lewy body dementia in 2014. He is still very much missed today!
